Baby blessing's Ubud style.

January 26, 2016

Here in the wonderful cosmic world of Ubud...whilst there is a definite shortage of bars, there are Blessingways in abundance! Chances are you have either heard of or attended a baby shower at some point in the weeks leading upto an impending birth, where women unite, gossip is gathered and gifts are purchased for the baby, excitment conjured up around its imminent arrival. However there is a beautiful pre-birth tradition which is becoming more and more popular as word spreads. Its called a blessingway, also known as a mother blessing. A blessingway is an old Navajo (Native Amrrican) ceremony, which celebrates a woman's rite of passage into motherhood. A Blessingway is all about nurturing the mother and filling her cup so it overflows with confidence and love as she awaits the birth of her baby. A woman who is given lots of love has more love to give in return - and there is nothing like a circle of Dorisis to get that divine hormone oxytocin, (the hormone of love and bonding) flowing! A blessingway helps a woman to prepare spirituallay and emotionally for the role of mother. She is held in a ceremonious circle of women whom she loves, repects, looks upto and values, allowed to release any blockages she maybe feeling and to embrace and celebrate what's to come. Her heart is warmed, her spirit honored and her body adorned with flowers whilst she is washed with hippy songs and goddessy magic!

Stuart made this lovely film of the beautiful Celina's blessingway. Celina is gorgeous fellow muma, and midwife from Poland. A group of us were all pregnant together and she gifted us with all her wisdom along the way, organising hypnobirthing classes and attending our every question with such grace and enthusiasm. This was our gift to her in exchange for her fanny massage workshops and general pregnancy guruness. Men are present here, less hunting for them to be getting on with in the cosmopolitan Ubud and as i mentioned fewer bars to accomodate the gathering of pint glasses so they are sometimes allowed to come along and thread beads, much to their natural confussion.....

Archie gate crashed mine himself it seems, as I never got around to organising one due to his early welcome into the world, however i've attended a few and this is a delighful example of a charming event. Perhaps I could brake tradition and organise a post birth blessingway, maybe get the boyz to organise it, stick on some Mowtown and rack up the tequillas........
